What is botulinum toxin and what preparations based on it are used in cosmetology

It is impossible to defeat deep facial wrinkles with the help of ordinary cosmetics and folk masks. To combat the consequences of active emotions, one has to use the latest developments of powerful drugs, the use of which, although effective, is very ambiguous. Many cosmetologists recommend Botulinum toxin. Based on this component, there are several formulations that quite successfully allow you to eliminate wrinkles in full and for a long time.

What it is?

Botulinum toxin is an organic poison, the ingestion of which in significant doses into the human body provokes hypoxia and paralysis of the respiratory system, which, in turn, leads to death. The word botulus has Latin roots and is translated into Russian like sausage. This original name is due to the fact that in nature poison was often found precisely in foods of this kind. For reproduction, botulinum toxin prefers an anaerobic environment (that is, a complete lack of oxygen), which is why the probability of its presence in canned products is extremely high.

Scientists emit 9 of various groups of poison, but injections of cosmetic products involve the use of botulinum toxin type A and type B, other varieties are not used.

History of use in cosmetology

Butolotoxin was first used for medical purposes in the 70 of the 20 century in the United States for ophthalmology. The drug was further purified and diluted, and only then injections were made on its basis to minimize muscle cramps. As a result of experimental treatment, it was noticed that injections not only contribute to solving the tasks, but also have a local anti-aging effect.

So, the reviews of specialists of those times contained information that deep facial wrinkles were temporarily smoothed out in full, the skin visually became more youthful and toned. This provoked an insignificant at first, and then a larger-scale demand, additional research and studies began.

Botulinum toxin in cosmetology began to be actively used in the early 2000’s. Today, in Europe and the United States in one year, several million successful procedures are carried out with drugs based on it.

Botox – the progenitor of all compounds

For the first time, Botulinum toxin was used as part of the American Botox. The product is manufactured by the largest concern Allergan and is used to treat muscle cramps, hyperhidrosis, strabismus, as well as to eliminate facial wrinkles. Botox has three main components:

  • botulinum toxin type A;
  • human plasma albumin;
  • sodium chloride.

Injections are carried out intramuscularly in most cases without prior anesthesia. In the treatment of excessive sweating, the composition can be administered subcutaneously, as with mesotherapy. The principle of action of the drug (as well as other analogues) is based on the stopping of nerve impulses, which cause our muscles to contract, and the skin to form folds.

The effect of the procedure begins to appear in about a week, reaching its peak by the end of the 14 day, it lasts about 3-7 months, after which the effect of botulinum toxin is reduced to zero. The most important characteristics of the product include the relatively large size of the molecules. Due to this, the composition is more slowly excreted from the body and has a directed effect, that is, it does not extend to neighboring muscles.

Dysport – an alternative solution

Botulinum toxin is also found in a French drug called Dysport. This tool is largely reminiscent of Botox, but is less concentrated. As auxiliary components, lactose is used, which replaces sodium chloride, the remaining ingredients remain unchanged. For the manufacture of Dysport, smaller molecules of Botulinum toxin are used, due to which it:

  • begins to act faster, about the third day;
  • excreted from the body also faster;
  • can spread to neighboring muscles, causing additional side effects.

The price of one Dysport unit is much lower than the price of one Botox unit, but the final prices for the procedures are approximately equal. This is due to the fact that the number of Dysport units will be required for the same machined area.

Xeomin – a step into the future

Botulinum toxin type A underlies the development of the German drug Xeomin, which is considered one of the safest in its category. In addition to it, the product contains serum albumin and sucrose. However, the main difference between Xeomin and its analogues is a higher degree of protein purification. This improves safety and reduces the risk of side effects.

As you probably already understood, Botulinum toxin preparations cannot be completely safe for human health, since they belong to the category of drugs containing dangerous poison. Injections of these drugs are contraindicated in the following cases:

  • pregnancy;
  • fever;
  • lactation;
  • oncology;
  • colds;
  • exacerbation of chronic diseases associated with the work of internal organs;
  • inflammatory processes in the alleged areas of the skin for processing;
  • individual intolerance to the main or auxiliary components.

Be sure to follow the specified contraindications, neglect of your health can provoke serious negative consequences.

Side effects

Botulinum toxin often provokes side effects, as evidenced by the numerous reviews of patients. Xeomin injections are considered the safest; in this product, its molecules are not only large enough, but also underwent additional purification. And most often it provokes a negative reaction of Botulinum toxin in Dysport.

The classic side effects include:

  • swelling;
  • soreness;
  • bruises.

In some cases, dizziness, nausea, general weakness, fatigue, and drowsiness may occur. In addition, in large quantities, Botulinum toxin can provoke a rapid heartbeat and numbness of the limbs.

Botulinum toxin-based drugs For many years it has been quite successfully used to eliminate facial wrinkles. Instructions for the use of these tools are mandatory, and any specialist error will lead to very unpleasant consequences.
